Academy Awards 2012

Sunday night I went to the movies to watch the 2012 Academy Awards. 2011 turned out to be a good year for movies. There have been better years but I still watched a lot of great movies. Overall I watched 52 movies that came out in 2011. The worst movies I watched were The Tree of Life and Sanctum. Sanctum goes without saying but the critics love The Tree of Life. Personally I had no idea about what was going on. There was everything from the creation of the earth, to dinosaurs, life in the 50's, and life today. It ends with all characters walking on some beach. Super weird and not at all a movie I enjoyed to watch. I would prefer to watch grass grow for two and a half hours rather than watch that movie again.

Now for the positive things. I will state my top five movies of 2011 before I write about the Oscar show itself. My top 5 is as follows:

#5 - Margin Call

#4 - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

#3 - Drive

#2 - Midnight in Paris

#1 - Warrior

My number one might be a bit surprising, but it is a surprisingly great movie. It has great acting, great drama and a good deal of action. The reason why it was only nominated for one oscar was probably because of the violence, and very violent movies have historically not have great success. I should mention that Limitless and A Better Life were movies that ended up just outside of my top 5. Also really good movies.

I went to the movie theater with Trine and Malte and watched the Academy Awards there. It was a fun experience, but I think the Academy played it safe by using Billy Crystal as host. He did a good job though and was pretty funny throughout the show. However, I would like to see Robert Downey Jr. host it soon, maybe co-hosted by Jude Law. I think Emma Stone was hilarious when she presented an award, and that could be a way to go, if the Academy will try a young host again. Perhaps co-hosted by Jonah Hill? It can only be better than Anne Hathaway's and James Franco's performance last year.

There weren't really any huge surprises in the in winners. I was actually surprised that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won an award, but I think it was well deserved. It was The Artist that took the major awards, and Hugo took a lot of the technical awards.

Overall it was a good experience, and I look forward to hopefully watch even more movies in 2012 and watch the OSCARS at the movie theater again.
